It’s time for a major confession. There is an underlying tension when someone asks my children where they go to school. There is this twinge that happens almost like a knee-jerk reflex. There is a worry that isn’t the panic kind of worry but a steady eroding acid that has been eating at my self esteem.
It goes like this.
Stranger: Where do you kids go to school?
My Kids: We are homeschooled!
Stranger: Oh, I see. How is that? Do you like that?
Me: It’s been great.
My kids: It’s much easier than public school was and way more fun.
Me: We are working really hard. They just enjoy it more so it doesn’t seem like work.
I want to jump in as soon as my kids say they are homeschooled and inject my reasons or what we do for work. I feel this need to defend myself and my decision to homeschool. Lately I have been working on this and I am proud to report that the last time I was criticized for homeshooling I was able to walk away smiling.
You see it’s all tiny crap. I spend so much time worrying what other people might think. The bottom line is by the time my kids are old enough to start down a path they would like to whether that is college or a career. I am 100% sure they will be ready. If they cant remember what year a historical document was signed or have to refresh their algebra skills it wont kill them. I am positive they will be resourceful and able to stand on their own two feet.
I am teaching my children life skills. Not just math, history, language arts, and science. They can cook, clean and organize. They can repair their clothes and build small wood projects. They will be able to change tires and oil. They can put together a damn good garden and know the importance of caring for animals.
I am raising two sons. Two men that will go out into the world and leave each person they deal with in a way that showed the compassion, intelligence and understanding that is not taught in public school.
Two men who will excel in whatever field they go into, remembering the value of friendships, love and family.
I do believe public and private schools can give good educations. I know that I can provide the education and so much more within the same time frame.
Have you felt like you had to defend yourself against criticism?
