I can’t tell you how many times I have been told
“Dont you worry about them being socialized?”
“You are not a state certified teacher so what makes you qualified to teach your kids?”
“Why do you have to be so difficult?”
“There is nothing wrong with public school, I went and I am fine.”
“Arent your kids going to be socially awkward and weird?”
“You cant work and teach your kids.”
“Are you just doing this to be different?”
“How can your kids learn anything at your house?”
“Just my opinion but maybe if your kids went to public school they would be smarter or better at sports.”
Now, I am by no means a professional on how to deal with people.
I have faced harsh criticism for several years and I have learned how to deal with it through trial and error. The first thing to do is check your feelings. Yes, your personal feelings, you know the ones that tell you scream at them or get snappy. The ones that make you daydream about giving that person the finger. I speak from experience when I say that arguing with people who have strong enough opinions that they think they can tell you all about how you are living your life incorrectly is like wiping your ass on a hula-hoop. It just goes round and round in a never ending shit cycle.
Stop the shit cycle by hog tying those emotions. It’s safer to revisit the feelings later in good company like a polite persona and talk behind their backs.
Next I suggest you slap a smile over the contempt on your face. Just plaster it so large that it feel like your face will crack. Show the teeth and all!
Then you can have prepared short statements like these to answer or you can come up with your own.
“We socialize our dogs and educate our children”
” Are you qualified to wear that pair of pants in public”…… ( haha just seeing if you are paying attention)
“I appreciate your concern but we have made a well informed decision and I know you respect that just like I respect your opinion”
” If public school was so wonderful why are we falling behind as a country in education standards?”
“Some of the founding fathers of our country were homeschooled”
” Treating kids like cattle is every persons right and not one I exercise”
“My kids my responsibility”
These are just a few that I have either used or considered using. How do you handle criticism? I would love to hear your responses, leave me some comments!
